Field guide
This is the whole job. Keep your phone charged, scan the sticker, do the work, take the photo, close it out. The app handles the rest.
Signing in
Your manager will send you an invite — usually over WhatsApp or text. Open the link on your phone after installing the Knurl app. Enter your phone number, get the 6-digit code, and you're in.
Scanning a QR code
Tap the Scan tab. Point the camera at the sticker. Knurl recognises the QR and jumps straight to the asset. From there you can:
- See open work orders on this asset
- Report a new issue
- Log a meter reading (for assets that have one)
Seeing your assigned work
The Work tab shows everything assigned to you, in priority order. Tap a row to open it. The state badge tells you what Knurl expects next.
Updating status
- Start — switches the order from Assigned to In progress. Only you, the assignee, can do this.
- Hold — waiting on parts or someone else? Tap Hold and add a reason. The manager sees why.
- Resume — back to In progress.
- Complete — done. Requires at least one photo and a note describing what you did.
Adding notes
Long-press the work order or tap the + button on the detail screen. Notes are part of the permanent audit trail. They never get edited or deleted, even by managers.
Photo proof
Tap Add photo. Use the camera or pick from your gallery. You can attach multiple photos. The app uploads them in the background — you don't need to wait.
Important: the app uploads photos before the work order completion. If you complete while offline, the completion waits on device until the photos finish uploading. This guarantees photo proof is never missing.
How offline mode works
The app fully works offline. You can scan, accept, update, take photos, add notes, and complete work orders without any signal.
Everything you do is queued in two ordered lines: a photo queue and an action queue. Photos go first, then actions — so a completion never references a photo that hasn't made it to the server yet.
What happens when signal returns
Knurl detects connectivity coming back and starts draining the queues automatically. You'll see a small banner at the top: “Syncing N items”. When it disappears, you're fully caught up.
Open the Settings → Sync screen to see exactly what is pending and when it last succeeded.
What to do if a QR code is damaged
QR stickers can peel, scratch, or fade. If a scan fails:
- Find the asset by name from the Assets tab and tap it directly.
- Open the asset, tap Reprint QR, and have your manager print a new sticker.
- If you don't see Reprint QR, ask your manager to do it from the dashboard.
A damaged sticker does not lose data. Every asset has a permanent ID inside Knurl that is independent of the printed sticker.
If something doesn't work
Tell your manager first — they can usually resolve it from the dashboard. If they can't, they will reach support@knurl.work on your behalf.
